Sewing and Learning

Like I've said before, I'm not a seamstress by any means.  But ever since I did this bumper for a friend, I've caught a sewing bug.  I've been seeing these cute burlap Christmas stocking all around.  They look really easy to make so I thought I'd try it out.  I found this great tutorial over at Cozy Cottage Cute, it looked easy enough.  But hers is way cuter, she took the extra time to do pleats for the cuff.
Here's how my first attempt turned out
Yikes! Very messy indeed, but I will try again.  Isn't that what sewing is all about, if at first you don't succeed....
I'm learning as I go along, but if it wasn't for all of you and this blog land stuff, I probably wouldn't even be attempting this.

  1. i think it looks adorable! i used to sew all the time when i was pregnant with my first and when he was a baby.... it is addictice, isn't it? :) happy sewing!

  2. Good job! It just takes the will to learn and practice. I learned to sew when I was 7yrs old, but it's been awhile now since I've used my sewing machine. I can't wait to start sewing again. I'm a newbie to blogging, and all of the creative people out there, such as yourself have inspired me to start up again. Isn't it fun?
Stop by and see me sometime!

  3. Good for you! I think it's sweet! I've got the itch to start sewing but first need to get the sewing machine. I think your first stocking is to be treasured!

  4. Very cute. Practice makes perfect. I love to sew but for some reason I can only sew in the winter. It becomes quite the passion. Now I am into quilting.

  5. Hey there!

I think your first attempt looks really good. Especially since you are new to sewing! I started up last winter with a basic cushion and I've been getting better with practice. I really like how the patterned fabric looks against the burlap.

I wanted to give you a tip before you start your next one. I think your stocking liner may be inside out?

After you sew the burlap part, you flip it inside out so that the good sides are showing.

For the liner though, don't flip it inside out. Leave the wrong side of your fabric showing when you place it inside the burlap part.

Then, when you flip the cuff over, the good sides will be showing. Also, when you peek in the stocking you will see the good side.

    Does that make sense????

Good luck and thanks for the shout out!!! :)

Email me if you have any questions...

  6. I think you did a very good job on your stocking. Sewing can be both fun and economical. If you know how to shop for bargain fabrics you can save on many sewing projects for home and family.

  7. i'm in the process of learning to sew as well. it's fun, but i get frustrated pretty easily. lol

thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. take care.
