Road kill

Well, I guess I just don't have enough people looking at my blog yet to try and do a link party.  It was worth the shot.
I have been very busy lately, refinishing several pieces of furniture.  So stay tuned I will be posting pictures next week!
Earlier this week I saw what appeared to be a cute little side table down by someones trash.  I drove by it the first time but continued to think about it for the rest of the day. So I went back.  I pulled into the driveway and got out  to take a closer look.  Upon closer inspection, I realized it was in pretty bad shape.  Boards peeling up all over the place, lots of water damage, as if it had been outside for awhile.  But still I tried to talk myself into taking it home and trying to do something with it.  But then I opened up one of the drawers and saw a TON of roach poop, and a couple roaches.  That made my decision for me.  No way was I going to toss that in my trunk.

Lesson learned...there are some pieces of furniture that are meant to stay by the road.
Too bad I didn't take a picture, but you can use your imagination.
Off tomorrow--Have a great weekend!

Wednesday" What nots" Link Party!

Hey everyone!
I've decided to try out my own linky party today and if all goes well, every Wednesday from here on. I think they are so much fun and a great way to get new ideas and make new bloggy friends. So if you would like to participate, you must provide only the link to your post not your blog.

**It must have something to do with a particular piece of furniture, decoration, or any "what not" you have acquired over the years. It could also be a before/after or something you hand made. Something you love and want to share with blog land. Please copy the code in my sidebar and post my button to show you were featured here today, thanks!  Have fun!

Here are some lovely bottles I found at an antique store a few weeks ago. The one on the right is an old insulator used on power lines.

Feature

Today my cute little side table has made it's way over to Life in the fun lane.  I love her blog and very happy she chose my work again to be featured on her Fresh Coat Fridays, where she featured my desk 2 weeks ago.    Holly is very talented when it comes to finding treasures and decorating.  She has inspired me to try my hand at my own refinished furniture,  I wrote to her and told her so.  She is so nice, as busy as she is, to write me back.  So go on over and take a look, you won't be disappointed.  I've also linked over to  *Remodelaholics, and Just a Girl

On another note I made this and it was yummy!
Fried chicken ranch wrap
2 chicken breasts or (4 chicken cutlets)
2 cups romaine
1 cup shredded cheese
2 tbsp ranch dressing
2 tbsp Cajun/chicken seasoning (optional)
1 cup flour
1 egg
1/2 cup oil
4 small tortillas
First heat oil over med/high.
Mix flour and seasoning in a bowl. And egg in another bowl.
Cut the chicken in half, or use cutlets.  Dip chicken into flour mix first, then in egg and flour again.  Place in pan to fry until golden on both sides.
When chicken is done, cut into strips.  Lay on your tortilla along with cheese, lettuce, and ranch.  Roll up and enjoy!

Have a great weekend!

Fabric lining

I thought maybe some of you might want to know how to line your drawers with your favorite fabric.  Like the ones I did here on this side table.
It is a pretty simple project all you need are scissors, mod podge, measuring tape, and a yard of fabric.
First measure your drawer.  I used a ruler and a pencil to make my marks and then cut straight lines.
Spread a layer of mod podge on the bottom of the drawer, then lay your piece of fabric down and smooth out all the bubbles.  Then, spread another layer of mod podge in the corners and around the edges of the fabric.  Let dry and your done!

Update

Over the weekend I made some changes to my little side table.  The inside of the drawers had seen better days, so I lined them with super cute fabric. I was unable to find a matching pull so I went with a better choice that really updates the piece.

Okay so I know it's summer, but this chili is too good not to share.  This is seriously one of my favorite chili recipes.  So go ahead crank up your AC and fix yo'self some chili!
                               Courage Chili-Paula Deen
Ingredients:
2 pounds lean ground beef (I use turkey)
2 large onions, finely minced (about 2 cups)
1 tsp. garlic powder
1.5 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. chili powder
 1.5 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. sugar
One 10.75 oz. can condensed French onion soup
1 Tbsp. flour
1/2 tsp. Tabasco sauce
One 28 oz. can chopped tomatoes with juice
Two 16 oz. cans kidney beans, drained (I used pinto beans)
1 large bag of Frito's
1 cup sour cream
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese

Directions:
Brown beef and one & a half cups of onions in large skilet. Drain off pan drippings.
Add garlic powder, salt, chili powder, oregeno, sugar, soup, flour, Tobasco sauce. Mix well.
Simmer 1 hour, covered, stirring occasionally.
Add tomatoes & beans, stir & simmer, covered, for 20 minutes longer.
When the chili is done, empty the bag of Fritos into a large serving bowl, scoop the chili on top of Fritos & top with dollops of sour cream, remaining half cup of onions, and cheddar.

Serves 4-6
"When I'm under stress and I sense that trouble's coming, I need to eat something hot, something substantial, and something that gives me what feels like strength and courage. There's nothin' like dippin' into a bowlful of chili in such moments. Chili’s a nourishing rib- sticker; you don't need no fancy food dishes when you need your strength. Y'all need chili.
Note: Some Texans don't like beans with their chili. I do." -Paula Deen

My comfort food and a mouse

My kind of comfort food includes anything fried, with cheese, or warm and creamy.  Last night I made an old favorite, which I believe came from my dad's mom.  My mom made it all the time and I love it.
It's quick and easy and tastes oh so good.
Hot Chicken Salad
  • 4 c shredded cooked chicken
  • 1 c chopped celery
  • 1/2 c chopped onion
  • 3/4 c mayo
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 3 sliced boiled eggs
  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 brick of chedder cheese (I like this much but you can do less)
  • 2 c crumbled potato chips.
Combine first 8 ingredients, stir and put into baking dish. Top with shedded cheese and chips.
Bake 400 for 25 minutes. ENJOY!!

On another note, my cat scared a sweet little mousey into our rose bush the other day.  It was sooooo cute and scared.  He just sat there while we took several pictures of him.

Desk before/After and a little spray paint

Here is a desk that my husband had in his room growing up.  He says it's where he used to do his homework.  His parents gave it to us when we moved in together.  I never much cared for the "wood" it was made out of so I got out some paint and took care of it.
Before
I went up to Lowe's found some "oops paint"  if you don't know what that is then you should definitely check it out.  I got 2 quarts of white paint for $4 and a little sample of a pretty greyish/blue color for $1.
Mixed them together for a light bluey/grey, that I LOVE.  I sanded her down with some 120 grit sandpaper, got all the glossiness off her.  Primed her with Kilz ,  let that get nice and dry. Then on goes the paint.  I mixed up my own concoction creating just the right color I was looking for.  And painted her.  After the paint dried I  put on a coat of clear polyurethane, semi-gloss.
Here she is AFTER

And in her new spot in the alcove of a bay window in the guest bedroom.  It's my new spot to write letters, pay bills, or just sit and look out the window.
It's a lovely spot.
Also nice for the occasional guest.
I also wanted to share this piece that I spray painted in Rust-oleum Heirloom white.  Sorry there is no before pic, because I did this before I started blogging :)
But here it is....

Blogging and dinner

After spending many hours today, while my little one napped, I finally created some sort of a logo and got it centered.  Talk about trial and error.  No body ever told me how confusing all this blog stuff is!  It's like something no one talks about.  HTML this, HTML that. What the heck is an HTML anyway!
So after all that and a trip to the pool, I wasn't in the mood to make a big dinner so I used an old stand by recipe, that is easy and delicious.
 Zesty Bow Ties
  • One lemon juiced
  • 1/2 cup Olive oil
  • 1 Tbs oregano
  • 1 Tbs chopped garlic
  • 1 pkg baby spinach
  • 1 box bow-tie pasta (drained and cooled)
  • 1 pkg feta cheese crumbles
  • 1 cup halved grape tomatoes

In a bowl, whisk together 2 Tbs lemon juice, add olive oil, oregano and garlic; set aside.

Cook spinach in a little boiling water or in the microwave.  Place in colander;rinse with cold water.  In bowl, combine pasta and spinach. Drizzle with oil mixture;toss to combine Stir in cheese and tomatoes.

Ready to eat!
